Summary

An award-winning fantasy debut with snappy dialogue, a kick ass heroine and a warlord who’s not quite as ruthless as he seems, set against a world on the brink of battle, full of gods, magicians, dragons, giants, and endless possibilities.

Kingmaker. Soothsayer. Warrior. Mage. Kingdoms would rise and fall for her . . . if she is ever found.

In the icy North, where magic is might, an all-powerful elite ruthlessly guided by a glacial Queen have grown to dominate the world. Now rebellion is stirring in the rough, magic-poor South, where for the first time in memory a warlord has succeeded in uniting the tribal nations.

Stuck in the middle is Cat – circus performer and soothsayer – safely hidden behind heavy make-up, bright colours and the harmless illusion of the circus. Until someone suspects she’s more than she seems . . .

Captured by the Southern warlord Griffin, Cat’s careful camouflage is wearing thin. For how long can – or should – she conceal the true extent of her power? Faced with dragons, homicidal mages, rival Gods and the traitorous longings of her own heart, she must decide: is it time to claim her destiny and fight?

‘This book is utterly breathtaking!’
Darynda Jones, New York Times bestselling author

The verdict

Greek mythology (once a Greek mythology fangirl, always a Greek mythology fangirl). Gods. Monsters. Magic. Kingdom shite. DRAGONS... what's not to LOVE?

“When Gods dabble in the affairs of men, anything can happen.”

I dug into A Promise of Fire with no expectations whatsoever. After having DNF'ed three books one after the other within the very first week of 2017, I had almost succumbed to this horrid phenomenon we bibliophiles call, 'The Slump'.

But the pure delight that this story turned out to be, it pulled me right out of my misery and sucked me in from the very first page. Honestly, this one is a super-hard-to-put-down piece of awesomeness, so make sure you don't start reading right before bedtime. I've lost sleep over this.

I loved Amanda Bouchet's writing style a lot and it was one of the main reasons that kept me turning the pages all night long (other than the plot, the characters and of course the Greek mythology). Did I mention I LOVE fantasy titles with Greek mythology in them? I kind of did, didn't I? Oh, okay...

A Promise of Fire turned out to be an entertaining, action packed read (no kidding), with a badass, sassy heroine, real strong chemistry and well crafted, three dimensional characters (squad goals?) who made me start missing them as soon as I turned the last page.

And now I have to wait for the sequel. Bummer. Go read it already!
