Travelling on a budget

Guest Post by Nadia Nader

Traveling on a budget is easy to accomplish with sufficient planning ahead of time. The first thing you need to decide is how you will get there. These days there are many options when it comes to flights. It’s easy to find a cheap flight if you book enough in advance. Be sure to check out online options and travel agents. Of course if you don’t need a flight, it cuts down on cost. Buses, trains, and cars are a good option depending on where you want to go.

Once you get to the location of your choice, you can choose to stay at a good clean hostel. Or if you’re lucky, you can find a cheap hotel room. If you pick a hotel on the outskirts of the city center you can generally get a good deal. Make sure that if you do that the city you’re in has a good transportation system and you know where the nearest bus stop or subway station is. Buying a ticket for a longer timeframe can sometimes save you more money than if you purchase tickets for daily travel.

Many local attractions offer free entry. Research what you want to do. There are many free museums and parks that are enjoyable to spend time in. Street food is a cheap alternative to costly meals. I tend not to have three meals when I travel. I focus on having a good breakfast and eat small snacks along the way. One way to make sure I don’t overspend on food is by visiting a supermarket and buying packets of nuts and apples to make sure I have sufficient healthy snacks available.

Another free thing to do is discover the city you’re in. Walk around admiring the architecture (it’s free!) or enter the various art galleries to enjoy the local art scene. Bars and pubs sometimes have free entertainment during weekends. So the price of a drink can get you a show as well.

You can easily travel on a shoestring budget if you plan the right way. Research is key. Wherever you go make sure you pay attention to safety and I hope you will have a wonderful time.
